The beautiful stone of lapis lazuli was imported to Europe at the end of the Middle Ages. Here it was ground into powder and then made into the most exquisite, exclusive and expensive of blue pigments – ultramarine. It was beloved for its ability to almost shine on canvas, and for the color not to fade. It was such a noble good that oftentimes it was even prized over gold. It became especially popular during the Renaissance where the pigment was often used in depictions of the Virgin Mary and her blue robe. Other famous artworks containing the beautiful blue includes Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, which we already have been inspired by in our earlier collections.

Blue Cameo Bracelet Gold

Blue Cameo Bracelet with a gold plated robe chain.

The blue cameo is a tribute to Afrodite as a protector of the Sailors and the robe chain a symbol of the robes on the sailboat.

Afrodite is today best-known as the ‘goddess of love,’ but among the ancient Greeks she was also important in maritime religion, trade and travel.

She was carried aboard ships, worshipped at harbour side sanctuaries, and believed tohelp to bring whatever one desired, whether land, love or good weather. Her cult travelled from port to port around the Mediterranean, where Afrodite was merged with the Roman Venus.

Among sailors, who navigated by these stars, Afrodite-Venus was specially honoured at the opening of the sailing season in the Mediterranean springtime. She is therefor associated to the Greeks who took to the sea once again to trade, fish and travel over the summer months.

22K gold plated silver

The cameo is crafted in Torre del Greco and the jewellery is assembled in Valenza, Piedmont.

Our Story

Jewellery Care

Our jewellery is carefully crafted with raw materials made to last. Over time, precious jewellery will naturally tarnish and look dull if not cared for properly. We advise you to follow these recommendations:

Avoid contact with perfume, lotion, hairspray, soap, salt, chlorine or any other fluids and chemicals. Take off your jewellery when washing hands, bathing, doing household tasks, sleeping, tanning, going to the beach or doing sports.

Clean your jewellery softly in warm water and let it dry well. Or even better just gently wipe with a soft jewellery cloth.

Store and protect your jewellery when not in use. Keep it away from sunlight and humid spaces like the bathroom.

Afrodite is a Scandinavian jewelry brand created in Oslo and produced in Italy. Afrodite has in all stages of the creative process taken inspiration from art history, Greek mythology and above all is trying to unite the associated qualities of the goddess Afrodite; love, beauty, mystery and passion into unique jewelry. Each piece of jewelry is made with the idea of unity between Scandinavian design and the aesthetic depth of Greek history.
